Being aware of the Breath and the Body

The mind is amazing. It can jump into the past, whether remembering this mornings breakfast or an event from years ago. It can move into the future imagining events that may or may not happen. The human mind can go anywhere in an instant.

With this ability though, the mind can end up in the past or future too much. The present can be easily ignored. And that leaves us just going through our days on auto-pilot, not really noticing what’s going on.

That’s why the breath and the body are so important.

Each breath that we take is only happening in this instant. This in-breath and this out-breath only happens right now. The breath is always in the present, and by connecting to the breath we return to the present. It is like an anchor for us.

The body is the same. The sensations we notice in our body as we sit still or as we move are only happening right now. Experiencing the body brings us right back to the present moment. And allows us to live each moment more deeply.
